Nostalgic Music in Immigration: Connection or Loneliness

Nostalgic Music in Immigration: Connection or Loneliness:
Tuesday the 27th of May: 13.00 – 15.00
This study aims to delve into the impact of nostalgic music on immigrants, exploring its dual potential to alleviate feelings of loneliness and enhance a sense of belonging. Immigration is an intricate journey marked by numerous losses, where individuals grapple with the mourning process for the connections left behind in their homeland.
One important connection is cultural, including nostalgic music, which serves as an emotional bond to an immigrant’s homeland, evoking memories of culture, identity, and significant life events. It can trigger profound emotional responses that are crucial in maintaining cultural identity within the unfamiliarity of a new environment with providing solace and a sense of home. On the other hand, feeling nostalgia is an unmourned process, emphasizing feelings of isolation and separation from one’s homeland through the challenges of displacement and adaptation leads to feel of loneliness with separating people from new society.
It will be illuminated the role of nostalgic music in either fragmenting or reinforcing an immigrant’s sense of belonging. The findings will contribute to a deeper understanding of the immigrant experience, highlighting the emotional and cultural significance of nostalgic music in the lives of those who have
journeyed far from home.
