Treasures from the Archives

Wednesday 21st May
12.00 – 14.00

Online via Zoom

Based on a recently completed doctoral thesis, ‘Where is the Love?: a psychoanalytic history of The Cotswold Community’ (1967-2011), a therapeutic community for adolescent boys who had experienced trauma and disrupted attachments. This presentation examines eight items archives relating to the history of the therapeutic community movement. The first is from Bowlby’s archive, a letter from his time at Priory Gate in 1929, reflecting on his need for analysis and the principle that those working with disturbed children need their own analysis. The handbook from the Approved School which existed prior to becoming the Cotswold Community provides insight into the culture which existed prior to the transition to becoming a therapeutic community. In addition to this handbook, is a moving account from Bill Douglas, former Chaplain of the Cotswold Approved School. Transcripts of Balbernie’s talks provide an insight to his approach, and how this differed from that of the Approved School regime. Dockar-Drysdale’s reading list and Menzies-Lyth’s working notes provide valuable insight into the educational ethos of the community, and system of external consultancy. We also explore the relevance of the values of the community, and instructions given to staff, before concluding by discussing poems by Bill Allchin, and Chris Beedell, external consultants to the Cotswold Community.
